In season now: Zeeland mussels, game, Sinterklaas sweets, oliebollen

About this guide

Restaurants Netherlands is a field guide to the Dutch table. It answers the questions people have when they sit down in a Dutch eetcafé, brasserie or snackbar for the first time: what the words on the menu mean, whether to tip, why the waiter brings a card terminal instead of a bill, and what is in season this month.

Why there are no restaurant rankings

Restaurants open, close and change chefs every month, and paid placements fill most “best restaurants” lists. Dishes, customs and seasons come back every year. So this guide explains what to order and how eating out works, and leaves the choice of where to book to you.

How we check facts

  • Season dates come from the people who set them: growers’ associations, fish auctions and the fishing industry. Each season on the Dutch food calendar names its source.
  • Rules about paying, VAT and tips come from Dutch government and central bank sources.
  • Every article records the date it was checked and the sources behind it. When a fact changes, the article changes and the date moves.

Languages

The guide is written in English first, with pages in Dutch, German, Spanish and Italian for the questions people search in those languages. The menu decoder works for every reader.
