Card only in the Netherlands: what alleen pinnen means

Checked:

A bill tray with a receipt, euro coins and a contactless bank card

TL;DR

Alleen pinnen means card only. A small share of Dutch cafés and restaurants refuse cash, and they put a sign by the door or on the menu. The large majority still take it: about 97 percent of Dutch hospitality businesses accept cash. As of November 2026 no law forces them to: a duty to accept cash was voted through in 2024, but it is not in force and its start date is open. Bring a Visa or Mastercard and your phone, and you can pay everywhere.

Why do some Dutch places refuse cash?

Cash costs a business money and effort: counting the till, taking cash to the bank, insuring it and the risk of robbery at closing time. With most Dutch customers paying by card or phone anyway, some cafés decided cash is not worth it. In 2025 cash made up only 14 percent of payments in Dutch restaurants, cafés and bars, and 17 percent of payments at all Dutch tills.

So the card-only café is a real thing in the Netherlands. It is still a small minority: the hospitality association KHN counts 97 percent of hospitality businesses that accept cash.

Yes, for now. Here is where the law stands in November 2026:

  1. September 2024: the Dutch parliament adopted an amendment that writes a duty to accept cash into the Civil Code. Businesses selling to consumers at the counter would have to take cash for payments up to 3,000 euro.
  2. November 2025: the government published draft exceptions. Businesses could refuse cash between 22:00 and 06:00, businesses with fewer than four staff would be exempt, and so would delivery drivers taking payment at the door, as Accountant.nl reported.
  3. January 2026: three parties filed an amendment to scrap the duty, then withdrew it after the Finance Minister promised a compromise in line with coming EU rules on cash as legal tender.

The planned start date was most likely 1 January 2027, according to KHN. KHN expects the duty to miss that date, because the EU framework it has to match is not ready. Until a start date is fixed, a Dutch restaurant may choose to be card only.

A separate rule did start on 1 January 2026: cash payments of 3,000 euro or more for goods are banned. Restaurant meals are a service, so that limit does not affect your dinner bill.

Which cards work at a Dutch card terminal?

Dutch terminals take Visa and Mastercard, debit and credit, and any phone or watch that pays contactless. Dutch banks replaced the old Maestro cards with Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit from 2023, so terminals across the country run on the same networks as foreign cards. In 2025, 39 percent of payments at Dutch tills were made with a phone or smartwatch.

Two cards get refused more than others: American Express, which many small businesses do not accept, and some foreign credit cards at places that only take debit cards. Carry two different cards and you are covered. More on the bill itself in paying in Dutch restaurants.

What if you only have cash?

Look for the sign before you sit down: it hangs by the door, at the bar or at the bottom of the menu. If you only notice it at the end of the meal, tell the server straight away. Ask what they suggest: the simplest fix is a friend paying by card while you hand them the cash.

How do you say card or cash in Dutch?

Pinnen is paying by debit card, contant is cash and alleen pinnen is card only. The server asks pinnen of contant? when you pay. Look up any other word in the Dutch menu decoder.
